The latest economic outlook report released by Ipea (Institute for Applied Economic Research) indicates that the world economy continues to show signs of a slowdown in economic activity. Conflicts, trade tensions, and increased uncertainties in a world with increasingly integrated production chains ultimately affect investment. The pipe sector is no different. However, Brazilian companies are overcoming this difficult scenario with investments in technology and achieving good results.
“The steel sector faces global challenges and a prolonged recession in Brazil. Overall volumes have dropped significantly. To keep growing, it is essential that we diversify our operations with both new clients and new products, states Luis Otavio Barbosa, commercial director of BTL Steelworks.
The company is one of the participants in the 10th edition of Tubotech, the International Trade Fair for Pipes, Valves, Pumps, Fittings, and Components, organized and promoted by Cipa Fiera Milano with the support of ABITAM (Brazilian Association of the Metal Pipe and Accessory Industry) and Tarcom Promoções. The event, which is the sector's main showcase, takes place from October 1 to 3 at the São Paulo Expo Exhibition & Convention Center in São Paulo.
Simultaneously, the 4th Wire South America – International Wire and Cable Fair will take place, whose products and visitors have great synergy with Tubotech's audiences. The joint events will feature the participation of over 500 national and international exhibiting brands, occupying an area of 20,000 square meters, with an estimated audience of 13,000 industry professionals.
BTL Steelworks specializes in seamless steel pipes. Used in the most demanding applications, mainly in situations of high pressure, high torsional stress, and the conveyance of toxic gases (where traditional welded pipes cannot and should not be used), the product is the company's bet to navigate the challenging scenario while maintaining an agile and lean operation. “We hope that Tubotech will give us greater market visibility,” states Luis Otavio.
BTL, a Brazilian company (100%), began operations in this specific sector in 2009, when—after visiting international manufacturers—it gained access to seamless steel pipe rolling technology and subsequently began local production. For the 10th edition of Tubotech, the company plans to present one innovation for the oil and gas sector and another for the steel industry.
For João Luis Groth, director of Nacional Tubos, only sustainable GDP growth can mean “better days” for the sector. “A lot of competition with low consumption makes the market very weak,” he assesses.
As a strategy, Groth states that Nacional Tubos works with all suppliers in order to serve the customer in the best possible way. “We are going to bring ultra-high-strength tubes, which are increasingly being used by agricultural implement manufacturers. Tubes with a yield strength above 700MPa,” says Groth. The executive sees participation in Tubotech as a way to expand networking. “It is a relationship channel with current and potential clients, where we can receive them and also meet suppliers and share market information,” says Groth.
Customization
Sometimes technology makes room for innovative actions, such as service customization. This is what Tubos Oliveira does by working with custom-cut parts for the client, offering greater convenience and satisfying even the most demanding ones. Although it is a new market for the company, Tubos Oliveira states that it believes the prospects are good.
Specialized in carbon steel pipes, the company says it is confident that the pipe market will grow in the coming years, especially with the prospect of new projects that had been shelved due to the economic crisis.
